As part of Circuit, Tate St Ives are working with Newlyn Art Gallery to offer a fantastic digital workshop with the artist David Blandy.
This workshop is offered to young people between the ages of 15 and 25. FREE to participate, but limited spaces so bookings will be made on a first come first served basis.
David Blandy will collaborate with the participants in the creation of a Digital Abstract, a mash-up between appropriated art and pop imagery, collage and Hip-Hop sampling. Participants will share the work created at an exciting public event to be held on 6 December. The artwork will also be showcased online.

Grand Entrance
Larry Achiampong and David Blandy shared sounds from their connected audible heritage. In their performance 'Biters', the artists investigate what identity means in the post-colonial and post-mass media age as they acknowledge the debt their practices hold to hip-hop culture and its relationship with art and appropriation by presenting a recycled collection of already-sampled beats and reciting a collection of stolen rhymes.

On the weekend of 18 and 19 October – during the Frieze Art Fair – Serpentine Galleries presents the Extinction Marathon, the ninth in the Galleries' yearly Marathon series. Artists, writers, scientists, film-makers, choreographers, theorists and musicians explore the complex and timely topic of extinction through talks, conversations, performances and screenings.
Felt across the humanities and the sciences alike, the spectre of extinction looms over the ways in which we understand our being in the world today. Environmental degradation, atomic weapons, threats communities and languages, global warming, economic collapses, natural catastrophes, life wiped out by genocide, disease and hunger – the constellation of topics around extinction is ever-expansive and as urgent now as ever before.
Both a reflexive overview and a call to action, the two-day event invites us to respond, together, to a changing world, addressing visions of the future in all their scientific, artistic and literary ramifications. The Extinction Marathon is programmed in collaboration with artist Gustav Metzger, whose work – including his Serpentine Gallery exhibition Decades 1959 – 2009 – addresses extinction and climate change.

On Sunday 19 October, the Extinction Marathon begins with the London premiere of the documentary Seeds of Time, directed by Sandy McLeod, which follows crop diversity pioneer Cary Fowler on a journey to saving the one resources we cannot live without: seeds. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Cary Fowler and Sandy McLeod at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery and is free for Marathon ticket-holders. Booking required. Artangel Open Longlist 2014
Open is a £1 million initiative for new site-specific commissions across the UK
In addition to the two winning proposals from Maria Fusco and Adrian Jackson in collaboration with Andrea Zimmerman, the panel received over 700 submissions in 2014.
The Open Longlist is a selection of these submissions, showcasing an extraordinary reservoir of ideas for a huge range of possible locations - as well as a few impossible ones.

Video pieces and sonic experiments by emerging artists working in Africa and the diaspora.
Conceived as part of Africa Utopia 2014, this project draws from the notion of utopia as a concept allowing the reinvention of an African experiences, memories and narratives both from an individual and collective perspective. It also aims at grounding new media arts as a contemporary practice in Africa, and places artistic innovations from the continent in the immediate present.
The artists featured include Larry Achiampong (UK/Ghana) and David Blandy (UK); Nirveda Alleck (Mauritius); Younes Baba-Ali (Morocco/Belgium); Em’Kal Eyongakpa (Cameroon); Cecilia Ferreira (South Africa); Chido Johnson (Zimbabwe/US), and Laura Nsengiyumva (Belgium/Rwanda).
Digital Africa is dedicated to the memory of leading Malian video artist Bakary Diallo (1979-2014) who passed away in the Air Algérie tragedy on 24 July.
This display is conceived by Christine Eyene, curator and Guild Research Fellow in Contemporary Art, University of Central Lancashire.

Turtle Salon in the Forest
A screening in the forest at Sällbacken in Duved, Jämtland, Sweden
The Artist Colony presented Turtle Salon in the Forest, a temporary screening location amongst the trees in one of the vast forests of Northern Sweden. Organised as an open study night, the Artist Colony invited the public to experience a collection of video and film works drawn from the Turtle Salon network.
Compiling works by well known, mid career and emerging artists as well as those who make art without considering themselves artists, the event presented the opportunity to view work chosen by the artists and makers themselves. In an all night event this outdoor screening brought together a wide range of approaches to the moving image.

About Turtle Salon
Turtle Salon is a network founded by Michael H. Shamberg and which for him characterizes an approach to life and art. As a consequence of the Lebanese civil war and conflict with Israel, an area of beach formerly frequented by tourists
became a no man's land. In that space, undisturbed by people, the threatened sea turtles thrived - healing in the midst of war, in an chance space. Turtle Salon’s association to sea turtles brings forth the sense of peacefulness, wisdom, mystery and durability these animals convey.
Michael H. Shamberg is best know for his work as producer of music videos, in particular for his work with New Order, Patti Smith and R.E.M. He has also worked with artists Lawrence Weiner and Nancy Holt, Dan Graham, Vito Acconci and Robert Wilson among others.
About the Artist Colony
The Artist Colony is a place for artists to come together. With no requirement of ‘producing’ a group of artists meet to talk about art and explore subjects located outside of the trajectory of their own practice. Previously the Artist Colony have met at Solbacka in Borgå archipelago in Southern Finland and at Finca el Juncal in the Andalucian mountains in
Southern Spain. In Finland the Artist Colony spent time exploring local traditions while in Spain the focus was on nonmaterial explorations. This year the Artist Colony is gathering at Sällbacken in Duved in Northern Sweden to consider the screened and the mediated.

A consistently experimental genre, the music video spans a changing technological period. From the early documentation of live performance, artists have both incorporated and influenced the narrative techniques and marketing devices employed by the music industry.
AFTER/HOURS/DROP/BOX draws upon the reciprocal relationship of the artist as both a radical innovator and as an active and influential consumer of the medium.

Helix is a collaborative digital graphic novel created by artist David Blandy, scientist and writer Adam Rutherford and illustrator Daniel Locke. Helix tells the history of DNA from the perspective of a 500-year-old man kept alive by genetic therapy. The story spans a 40,000 year period, from ancient chimera, to modern day spider goats, to a speculated future of centuries old human beings.

The Annotated Palace Posters
Palace Projects is an artwork by Darren Banks re-contextualizing the UK Palace Pictures company who were the leading British producer and distributor of film on VHS throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Palace Projects looks at Palace horror films in a wider context through artwork, writing, filmmaking and curating.

The ‘Annotated Palace Collection’ (APC) is comprised of two bodies of creative work. Firstly 15 writers have written short texts in response to each film. Secondly 15 artists have been invited to create posters for each of the film titles, based on the supposedly blind-design method of Ghanaian cinema posters. The texts and images will be brought together in a small publication in 2014.
In the 1980s, Ghanaian artists created film posters to promote screenings of films distributed on VHS. It is possible that the artists had never seen, or knew little about, the films when they made their posters.

'Biter', 2013 An Artsadmin Jerwood Commission
David Blandy’s new video work Biter is an Artsadmin Jerwood Commission. It premiered at the Whitechapel Gallery’s Zilka Auditorium. A hip-hop fan since the early 90’s, the work examines how much hip-hop has entered the artist’s unconscious mind. Shot on location at The Freud Museum, Biter will ask questions about identity – how much of the artist’s self is hip-hop?
