David Blandy (1976, Lives & works in Brighton) makes work that slips between performance and video, digital and analogue, investigating the stories and cultural forces that inform and influence our lives. Collaboration is central to his practice, examining communal and personal heritage and interdependence. With research spanning multiple forms of archive, from historic texts to academic archives, archaeology and ecological theory, twitch streams and film archives, Blandy weaves poetic works that explore the complexities of the contemporary subject.

Blandy’s projects involve complex installations, performance, writing, gaming and sound.

Blandy’s film, Sunspot, had it’s international premiere at CPH:DOX, Copenhagen International Documentary Festival in March 2024. Sunspot is a poetic archive film about light, time, forest fires and quantum physics. Building upon his interest in history, the legacy of empire and the climate crisis, commissioned by John Hansard Gallery, Southampton.

Nominated for the Film London Jarman award with Larry Achiampong in 2018. He has exhibited & performed at venues nationally and worldwide, with solo shows at John Hansard Gallery, Southampton; Towner Gallery, Eastbourne; Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea; The Baltic, Gateshead; Turner Contemporary, Margate; Spike Island, Bristol; The Exchange, Newlyn; Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, Germany. Blandy has also exhibited in museums internationally including at Art Tower Mito, Tokyo; Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum, Helsinki; Tate Modern, London; & MoMA PS1, New York.

Whilst on a residency at Delfina Foundation, London, as part of The Politics of Food programme, Blandy explored his familial link to colonial food production and its legacy of agriculture as a tool to consolidate authority through the creation of a new collaborative world-building game, Gathering Storm.

Blandy also has a collaborative joint practice with artist Larry Achiampong. Genetic Automata, at Wellcome Collection was their first museum exhibition as a duo. Their first permanent public art commission, Trēow of Time, opened at University College London’s new campus in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, UCL East in December 2023.

In March 2024 with Jamie Sutcliffe, (Strange Attractor Press), Blandy ran a symposium at Artbyte London: Areas Of Effect: Planar Systems, Critical Roles, and Gaming Imaginaries. A day-long event that included presentations, tabletop game-play sessions and talks.

David Blandy is represented by Seventeen Gallery, London. His films are distributed by LUX, London.

Artist residencies include Delfina Foundation, London, as part of The Politics of Food Programme; Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Cambridge; Art Exchange, University of Essex, Colchester; Wysing Arts, Cambridgeshire; Praksis, Oslo, Norway; Iaspis, Stockholm, Sweden; El Levante, Rosario, Argentina; Grizedale Arts, Cumbria & PS1, New York, USA.
