Outcasting and Temporary Art Projects are pleased to present Totally Devoted – a screening of moving image works informed by the artists’ fanaticism for film, cinema and celluloid.

Through considered appropriation, re-enactment, archival excavation, editing and in some cases hours of rendering, the selected works highlight the influence of film and popular culture on artistic practice, revealing artists who engage enthusiastically with the language of cinema; the artist as a film fan.

Helix is a collaborative digital graphic novel created by artist David Blandy, scientist and writer Adam Rutherford and illustrator Daniel Locke. Helix tells the history of DNA from the perspective of a 500-year-old man kept alive by genetic therapy. The story spans a 40,000 year period, from ancient chimera, to modern day spider goats, to a speculated future of centuries old human beings.

The Annotated Palace Posters
Palace Projects is an artwork by Darren Banks re-contextualizing the UK Palace Pictures company who were the leading British producer and distributor of film on VHS throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Palace Projects looks at Palace horror films in a wider context through artwork, writing, filmmaking and curating.

The ‘Annotated Palace Collection’ (APC) is comprised of two bodies of creative work. Firstly 15 writers have written short texts in response to each film. Secondly 15 artists have been invited to create posters for each of the film titles, based on the supposedly blind-design method of Ghanaian cinema posters. The texts and images will be brought together in a small publication in 2014.
In the 1980s, Ghanaian artists created film posters to promote screenings of films distributed on VHS. It is possible that the artists had never seen, or knew little about, the films when they made their posters.

David Blandy’s new video work Biter is an Artsadmin Jerwood Commission. It premiered at the Whitechapel Gallery’s Zilka Auditorium. A hip-hop fan since the early 90’s, the work examines how much hip-hop has entered the artist’s unconscious mind. Shot on location at The Freud Museum, Biter will ask questions about identity – how much of the artist’s self is hip-hop?

Open was launched across the UK in January 2013. A call for artists working in any media, it offered an open invitation to share with Artangel and BBC Radio 4 proposals for ground-breaking projects in different sites across the UK.
Open was conceived as an ongoing opportunity and Artangel is now open again to proposals from visual artists, filmmakers, writers, composers, theatre makers, choreographers and producers as well as artists working in the digital space.
