"This book is a resource for artists encountering the dreamworlds of Japanese animation and anime-adjacent media. On the one hand, it is a collection of lyrical and theoretical provocations for thinking through the intensities and intimacies of fandom, for finding critical opportunities within the series, movies, manga, and video games that an increasing number of us have come to share emotional and intellectual connections with. But it is also—and perhaps more importantly—a book about the broader conditions of animation and animacy, of what happens to the relationship between “life” and “image” in a hyper-mediated techno-political milieu. It no longer seems appropriate to say that we simply “watch anime”, or “play video games”, but that our lives are to some extent affectively “produced”, “maintained”, or “conditioned”, by them.
